Rosemarie's Journey in Uganda: A Story of Sustainability in the Nakivale Refuge Camp

Last fall, Rosemarie, our program specialist, travelled to Uganda to deliver a series of workshops on sustainability education.

Rosemarie collaborated with the Nakujali Foundation, a refugee-led non-profit organisation based in the Nakivale Refugee Camp. During her visit, she worked alongside educators, community members, and youth leaders who are actively shaping the future of their communities. The workshops focused on sustainability education as a tool for understanding local and global challenges, strengthening systems thinking, and empowering young people to take informed action.

Together, participants explored how sustainability concepts can be rooted in lived experience—connecting environmental, social, and economic issues to everyday realities. Sessions emphasized collaboration across generations, community-based problem solving, and the importance of youth leadership in driving long-term change. What stood out most was the commitment and creativity of those involved.

We are deeply grateful to Oxford University Press, which donated several sets of project books and teacher guides of the Oxford International Curriculum for Sustainability. Rosemarie trained Nakujali youth leaders to teach this curriculum, and they have already begun delivering it in schools and communities across the camp.

This work reflects The Cloud Institute’s belief that sustainability education thrives when it is inclusive, locally grounded, and action-oriented—bringing together schools, communities, and young people to co-create solutions for a more sustainable future.

We invite you to explore this story and spend time with the beautiful picture book that emerged from this collaboration.
